Day 12: Short and Sweet
Written by: Dharani Sailam
Short and sweet. Two words that perfectly sum up my experience at camp this year. Since I was unable to join for the first half of camp, I was so grateful for the opportunity to come for the second part. It was definitely a different experience, but it was just as fulfilling and amazing to spend time with all the girls, as well as spend time in the mandir. Unfortunately, since I arrived late, I had gotten sick from the heat for the first few days, which was not ideal. Though I felt I was missing out on many activities, I never felt alone, as the aunties, uncles, and other girls were always looking out for me. They looked after me, just like my own family. Since I was still recovering, I had woken up late today, but I could faintly hear the girls singing Arati with Ammamma in GTR.
It was such a beautiful experience to be able to hear them all singing first thing in the morning, and it was definitely a great start to the day. For breakfast that day, though I was still recovering, I was so excited to try Ammamma’s rainbow idlis. However, the aunties advised me to eat some curd and rice, at least until my stomach felt better. I am so grateful that they were always looking after me, reminding me to drink some Pedialyte and making sure I was resting properly. Even though I could not try the new recipe, I felt just as happy eating alongside everyone else. The support and feeling of community was so special; I did not feel sick at all, but rather happy to be around everyone.
Since it began raining heavily, we were unable to paint the bakery or learn flower pressing from Sridevi aunty. However, this did not stop us from having fun together. We were all gathered in Babuji hall, and spending quality time together. This is one of the main things I absolutely love about Haritachala - no matter what, we all find ways to spread happiness and positivity.
Missing the first week of camp was not ideal, but for me, it was still just as fulfilling as I had imagined. This camp not only taught me lessons of community and belonging, but also allowed me to further my relationship with Baba and Guruji. Even being able to attend camp this year was such a blessing, and I am so grateful for this opportunity. Baba and Guruji showered me with love and support, surrounding me with all the volunteers and Geckos; my home away from home.
